Frequently Asked Questions
How can I fix my ugly cement patio?
To upgrade a cement patio, you could tear it all out and replace it with pavers, but that sounds like a lot of work—and money. Bosch’s Landscaping can discuss the look you want and then transform your plain gray cement into a beautiful surface that makes you say “Wow!”
We use a couple of methods. The first is topping it with a thin layer of stamped concrete that simulates the look of natural stones. Polymer resin bonds this thin layer to the original cement, and the surface is covered with a concrete sealer for durability.
We can also use staining and engraving or stencils to get a bright new look. The concrete can be tinted to whatever color you prefer, and stencils or engraving exposes the original gray to resemble grout, while still maintaining a flat surface. Voila! Your patio now looks like golden sandstone, charcoal slate, red brick, or paving stones without all the expense.
Contact Bosch’s Landscaping if you’re ready to turn your old patio from “meh” to “Ah!” Concrete overlayment design is one of our specialties, and we do it well. Call our office in Holland, MI at (616) 399-6861 to set up a consultation.
How do I know what type of fertilizer I need?
Choosing the proper fertilizer for your lawn can be tricky. What your grass needs depends on lots of things, like your soil type, whether or not you have dogs, how the sun travels across your property, when the lawn was put in, and what trees are growing and where—including ones on neighbor’s property! Are you more confused than ever now?
If you want a healthy green lawn that makes you proud of your yard, you can either do a lot of research and soil testing, or you can call us for help. Our lawn experts can analyze the soil in your outdoor area along with the other factors mentioned and make a plan to get your grass green and thick again.
We also know the correct timing, amounts, and best application practices for fertilizer so that we can protect water quality in the beautiful streams, rivers, and lakes that are such an important part of our West Michigan landscape.
For all your lawn maintenance needs throughout the season—including fertilization—call Bosch’s Landscaping in Holland, MI at (616) 399-6861 for information or a consultation.
How can I fit a water feature into my landscape?
There are so many ways to incorporate water features into your landscape design. Large outdoor spaces are great for ponds in various shapes and sizes. They can be edged and highlighted with beautiful water plants, or incorporate patio and sitting areas nearby so you can enjoy this natural water garden.
The sound of moving water is soothing and relaxing, and can be achieved with a rocky cascade if you have a hillside. Water can flow through a series of small ponds on different levels and be circulated back to the beginning with pumps. The splashing water in a man-made fountain invigorates all who hear it.
Even if you have only a tiny yard, you can incorporate a small basin with a bubbler pump, or a bird bath set in an attractive planting bed. Birds will love this, and you’ll enjoy their antics!
We can design and install just the right feature for your spot. Browse our portfolio for ideas and then call Bosch’s Landscaping in Holland, MI at (616) 399-6861 to take this next step in beautifying your outdoor environment. You can also use our online form to request a consultation.
What does hardscape mean in landscaping?
When thinking about an overall landscape design, you can basically separate that into two areas: hardscapes and the rest of your project.
The term “hardscape” refers to all the man-made features in the design. That includes things like driveways, patios, walkways, pools and ponds, fences and railing, and so on. That’s not because making them is hard (although it can be!) but because they are usually made from hard materials. These building products can be natural like stone, slate, and wood, or fabricated like cement and metal.
Hardscaping adds valuable characteristics to any design by providing places to drive, walk, sit, and gather. It can add architectural themes and beauty and define activity areas, as well as set the mood of your area using certain shapes—linear and geometric for a more formal look, curving and free-formed for a casual feel.
When designing your outdoor space, these features are determined first, as they define traffic flow and use of space. We then augment them with the rest of the landscaping: trees, shrubs, greenery, grasses and flowers.

What does landscaping design involve?
Landscaping design blends your dreams and the realities of your site into a well-thought-out space that fits your lifestyle. Steps in this process include:
- Talking together to find out how you use or want to use your yard, including plant and color preferences, how hands-on you want to be with maintenance, etc.
- Analyzing your space and deciding what to keep and what to let go
- Taking accurate measurements and making a detailed grid plan of all areas of your property
- Designing the layout of drives, entries, walkways, patios, and other elements like water features and play areas for the best traffic flow, sight lines, and ease of use
- Choosing plants that fit—trees, shrubs, grasses, perennials, annual planting beds, etc.
- Presenting and tweaking the final design with you to make sure it meets your expectations
- Complete installation of hardscape features, followed by plantings, beds, and lawn areas
